FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY, FOREMOST HYBRID COILED TUBING RIGS

The concept of drilling with coiled tubing has existed as early as the mid 1930’s. However, the potential of drilling with coiled tubing conveyed technologies have only become evident within the last decade. Today, is has become clear that coiled tubing can be used quickly and competitively to drill a wide variety of well bores in North America and around the globe. In 1997, CT technology was commercialized when Foremost Industries was commissioned to engineer and manufacture a fleet of CTR’s unique to the specific requirements of production drilling. This led to the development of second generation CTR’s, which incorporated a top drive system to facilitate the drilling of surface holes, and the implementation of the powered cat walk, an automated tubular handling system, thereby evolving CTR’s into true hybrid drilling units. To date, Foremost has designed and manufactured the majority of Hybrid Coiled Tubing Rigs for drilling with large diameter coil up to 3-1/2’ (89 mm). Coiled tubing is one of the fastest growing areas of oilfield drilling. It has both practical and economic benefits; with the increased efficiency of the continuous coil, penetration rates of 250 meters per hour are commonplace. In addition, well bores are left more stable as the penetration rate is consistent and not subject to the problems associated with starting and stopping circulation while making connections.
