Sanjel Reaches Company Record Depth on Consecutive Wells in the Bakken
In the Bakken field surrounding Williston, a typical horizontal well consists of a 3,048 metre (10,000 feet) vertical section and a 1,219-1,524 metre (4,000-5,000 foot) lateral section. As drilling and completions technologies have improved, lateral sections are now reaching 2,743-3,048 metres (9,000-11,000 feet) in length.
As a result, coiled tubing providers are now being challenged to reach these extended depths which in some cases can exceed a total of 6,096 metres (20,000 feet). Sanjel’s coiled tubing team in Williston has recently exceeded this depth twice.
Working on a multi-well pad for a major operator, Sanjel’s coiled tubing team reached depths of 6,146 metres (20,164 feet) and 6,334 metres (20,783 feet) on consecutive wells. This was accomplished by the company’s lab technicians finding a friction reducer fluid that significantly reduced the amount of friction between the coiled tubing and the well. This allowed the coiled tubing to deploy in its entirety and reach a significant depth without experiencing friction lockup on the deepest well.
Before reaching the final depth, Sanjel successfully milled out 26 plugs in a single trip.
