QUESTION OF THE MONTH:

The Arctic region is widely regarded as one of the world’s most costly to operate in. What impact do you think the advent of cheap shale gas and the impact of April 2010’s Macondo disaster is having on development of the most promising place on earth for new reserves?

Tsunevsky Andrey, Chief Specialist, Project Management Department, Gazprom:
Low cost of shale gas production is questionable. In any case, competition on the end market will be going up. At the same time, existing forecasts predict growing gas demand. The Macondo incident must turn the industry’s focus onto toughening the standards/control and prevention of oil spills.

Mikhail Gelfgat, R&D and engineering director, Weatherford:
There is an impact, of course, so we need to be very careful on selecting the new places of activities. Shale gas cannot replace the whole energy demand; the natural (conventional) gas is and will be the major source of energy in the foreseeable future. We are developing Arctic fields already: North Siberia and Alaska, so in first hand that areas would continue to be most promising.
