Emerson launches enhanced reservoir modeling software

Emerson Process Management has released Roxar RMS 2013, the latest version of its reservoir modeling software. RMS 2013 now comes with model driven interpretation capabilities and new, innovative solutions for seismic interpretation that are tightly linked to geological model building and provide users with a full seismic to simulation workflow.
RMS 2013’s model driven interpretation enables users to not only create the geological model while conducting seismic interpretation, but also capture uncertainty during the interpretation. This ability to provide users with unique tools for quantifying geologic risk early in the interpretation process will lead to better decision-making and improved investment returns.
“As the industry moves into more complex geological settings and more economically marginal prospects, the improved quantifying of geologic risk and the ability to make decisions faster based on the available data - no matter the quantity or quality - has never been more important,” said Kjetil Fagervik, managing director of Emerson’s Roxar Software Solutions.
Key benefits of RMS 2013 include:
• Capturing Uncertainty
Rather than creating one model with thousands of individual measurements, with RMS 2013 modelers create thousands of models by estimating uncertainty in their interpretations. The software then generates statistically significant ensembles of models based on these probability distributions providing immediate value to the geoscientist. For example, uncertainty maps can be used to investigate key risks in the prospect or areas can be quickly identified for further study. By capturing uncertainty at the beginning of the geoscience workflow, operators gain the best possible picture of their subsurface risks.
• The Model Is the Interpretation
Instead of a serial workflow for interpretation and geomodeling, model driven interpretation allows geoscientists to guide and update a 3D geologically consistent structural model directly from the data. This allows clients to focus their efforts directly on where the model needs more detail and on challenging and complex geometries so common in reservoirs today. Model driven interpretation also provides a platform for cross-disciplinary interactions. Geophysicists, with a strong understanding of the complexities of the seismic data, can work together with geologists and their understanding of lithologies and facies.
• Unlocking the Full Range of Models
RMS 2013 also brings new tools to market for analyzing the full range of structural uncertainties. Geoscientists can create suites of model realizations that satisfy many external constraints - from well picks and zone logs to velocity uncertainty and horizon or fault positional uncertainty. These model realizations also allow operators to sample and quantify uncertainty in their subsurface parameters further down the value chain.
Kjetil Fagervik concludes, “RMS 2013 provides the user with a more complete representation of the data in less time. With domain experts now able to quickly integrate and share knowledge across the prospect lifecycle, RMS 2013 places model driven interpretation and uncertainty management at the heart of the asset team, resulting in an improved quantifying of uncertainty and risk, and better decision-making. This can apply to bid valuations, new field development and operational plans, production estimates or divestments, or other reservoir management scenarios.”
Emerson’s flagship reservoir modeling solution, Roxar RMS is comprised of more than 20 fully integrated software modules, including seismic interpretation, structural model building, 3D gridding, facies and petrophysical modeling, flow simulation, well planning and uncertainty modeling tools. RMS 2013 operates on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 64-bit, Windows XP and the Vista 64-bit platform as well as the Windows 7 64-bit version.
