Schlumberger Opens Reservoir Laboratories to Offer Core Analysis to Customers

Operators regularly rely on indirect measurements from logs, seismic surveys, and well tests for information with which to evaluate reservoirs. In contrast, long sections of rock captured from thousands of feet below the Earth’s surface provide a means by which to directly measure critical reservoir characteristics.
 
These rock samples, or cores, offer direct evidence of the presence of hydrocarbons and the reservoir’s ability to produce them; cores also allow scientists to sample depositional sequences. Through laboratory measurements and analysis of the porosity, permeability, and fluid saturation of core samples, operators are better able to characterize the pore system in the reservoir rock. Using these data, production engineers are able to accurately model reservoir behavior and optimize production.
 
After years maintaining core analysis laboratories to support research, Schlumberger has recently opened Schlumberger Reservoir Laboratories to offer core analysis to customers. These facilities integrate rock measurement technologies with fluids expertise to help customers better understand their reservoirs. Laboratory personnel perform routine core analysis, which, in addition to porosity, permeability, and fluid saturation, allow geoscientists to evaluate grain density, lithology, and texture. Routine core analysis laboratories also provide core gamma ray logging to correlate depth with wellbore logging depth and core computed tomography scans to characterize rock heterogeneity.
