Salym Petroleum Development (SPD) set a new record of daily well drilling of 1,204 meters. It was achieved drilling the well at West Salym field from below long conductor shoe.
Maintaining high drilling performance was complicated by presence of multiple clay and durable sandstone interbedding. In addition, on the length of over 600 meters SPD specialists and contractors had to continuously gain drilling course slope angle from 16 to 62 degrees.
This notwithstanding, they managed to maintain high mechanical drilling speed: in rotary drilling mode – about 112 m/hr and in directional drilling mode – about 76 m/hr.
“One of the key success factors was implementation of the system of key operation duration indicators (microKPI), detailed analysis of facts found, and subsequent work on efficiency enhancement. Thus, on this well the time to make one connection was only 3 minutes and 12 seconds, whilst the time for one telemetry system measurement was 4 minutes and 30 seconds,” – Vyacheslav Popov, Senior Well Engineer, told.
Conductor, or surface casing, is a casing string intended for upper well interval casing for the purpose of covering the rock prone to wreckage or mud absorption. For the purpose of unconstrained conductor RIH its bottom part is equipped with a special shoe with streamline-shaped guide plug. Drilling and cement slurries circulate through the shoe and a conduit in the guide plug.
