Drilling Risk Management, Inc. (DRMI) set records for interval, ROP, and drilling footage using National Oilwell Varco (NOV) drill bits during three recent runs in Louisiana and Texas.

“We’ve been extremely happy and the bits have far exceeded the NOV program,” said Allan Bloxsom, DRMI president.

DRMI achieves bi-center run record

During a May 2014 run in Assumption Parish, Louisiana, DRMI used the NOV ReedHycalog 8 ½-in. x 9 ½-in. PSD5413 bi-center bit, beating a 2013 world record for an 8 ½ in. X 9 ½ in. bi-center run. The crew drilled the entire interval in a single run, drilling 9,278 ft in 116 IADC hours for an overall penetration rate of 80 ft per hour.

“I don’t know of anyone else’s bit design that has come close to that for the bi-center,” said Robbie Wilhelm, a partner at DRMI. “The run went excellently.”

DRMI sets drilling footage, ROP records

Using the NOV ReedHycalog 8 ½ in. RSR616M-B33 bit in June of 2013, DRMI set a drilling footage and ROP record in Sabine Lake Field in Jefferson County, Texas. The crew drilled the entire 8 ½ in. interval with one run, drilling from 3,010 ft to 10,500 ft in 81 hours with ROP of 92.5 ft per hour with excellent dull condition.

DRMI sets field record of interval and ROP

After the successful 2013 run, DRMI used the 8 ½ in. RSR616M-B33 bit again during a November run at the Bowie Lumber #1 well in Lake Boeuf Field, Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. DRMI accomplished all directional objectives and achieved the fastest ROP and the longest interval in the field.

The crew completed the run in 80.5 drilling hours and achieved an average ROP of 114.8 ft. per hour, exceeding the average ROP in Lake Boeuf Field by 97 percent. The bit exceeded the field’s average interval drilled by 223 percent.
