Eco-friendly Enhanced Oil Recovery Technologies

Engineering developments of TatNIPIneft have been successfully applied at JSC TATNEFT for enhanced oil recovery of the fields at the late stage of development. One of them, a technology of increasing depletion of oil reservoirs using compositions on the basis of silica gel (SSG-VUKSZHS technology) won the Grand Prix in the nomination "Innovative environmentally friendly technologies" in the contest of the 20th International Exhibition "Oil and Gas. Petrochemicals – 2013" for the best exhibit, engineering design or technical solution.

The SSG-VUKSZHS technology has been designed to increase the sweep efficiency and the oil recovery ratio. The reservoir stimulation method is based on the creation of a blocking rim of the non-organic microgel composition followed by diverting the flood into the less washed out intervals and displacement of remaining oil with application of surface-active agents (surfactants).

The advantages of the TatNIPIneft experts’ engineering development is the use of inexpensive domestically produced chemicals, possibility of using both fresh and mineralized waste water to prepare a composition, as well as the environmental safety of water injection procedures and safety of the obtained gel structures for the environment.

The technology has been commercially implemented at the oilfields of JSC TATNEFT since 2012. The average daily gain in crude oil production for the period amounted to 5.87 tons per day for one well. Technological efficiency duration of the process is 1.5-2.0 years.

TATNEFT is one of the largest, internationally recognized Russian oil companies, operating as a vertically integrated Group. The Company ranks No. 6 in Russia by the volume of oil production after Rosneft, Lukoil, Surgutneftegaz, TNK-BP and Gazprom neft.
