ERIELL Group and Schlumberger today announced the successfully completion of the construction of a 4245 m horizontal well in the Samburgskoye field using the latest rotary steerable system (RSS) from Schlumberger.
The combination of the new PowerDrive Orbit vorteX RSS with a customized Smith polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit and the MEGADRIL† adjusted oil-based mud completed construction of the horizontal well while establishing a new field record by drilling a 1308 m lateral sidetrack section in the shortest drilling time in the field.
New PowerDrive Orbit technology expands the operating envelope of rotary steerable by extending system life, delivering precise directional control and increasing drilling efficiency. The PowerDrive Orbit can perform at speeds up to 350 revolutions per minute (rpm) while still maintaining consistent steerability.
PowerDrive Orbit technology was combined with the PowerDrive vorteX powered RSS to increase rate of penetration and improve cuttings transport. The ability to pass two different types of downlink commands, either to change the flow rate of the drilling mud or the rotation speed of the system makes it possible to use this RSS in many types of drilling rigs.
The results of this operation confirmed that combining PowerDrive Orbit with the PowerDrive vorteX system improves drilling efficiency in adverse geographic and climatic conditions while developing the hard to recover deposits, especially in the overpressurized Achimov formation.
