Momentive Specialty Chemicals develops new resin-coated proppant for low temperature wells
13.05.2013
The Oilfield Technology Group of Momentive Specialty Chemicals has released a new resin-coated proppant technology for fracturing service companies and operators.
Momentive’s Black Ultra proppants are a next-generation resin-coated sand utilizing a multi-functional resin system that bonds at low temperatures. These proppants are ideal for fracture treatments in low temperature reservoirs where flowback control is necessary. Low temperature bonding down to 90°F (32°C) bottom-hole static temperature is achieved without the use of a consolidation aid. In addition, the resin alters the relative permeability of the proppant pack, leading to higher oil production. These advanced proppants also contain re-healing properties, important for cyclic stress that occurs over the life of the well.
Like typical curable resin-coated proppants, Black Ultra’s proppant Stress Bond technology provides proppant flowback control, proppant embedment minimization and proppant fines reduction.
Momentive was the first proppant supplier to commercialize a low-temperature product in 2004 with its SiberProp proppant.
Resin-coated proppants are used in the hydraulic fracturing process to help optimize production from oil and gas wells by maximizing fracture flow capacity from the reservoir to the wellbore. Technological innovations and the introduction of enhanced materials have expanded the use of resin-coated proppants into unconventional reservoirs that feature complex and challenging geological formations.
