Salym Petroleum Development (SPD) set a new daily rate of penetration (ROP) record of 1,381 meters (4,530 ft). The S/J-shaped VAD-K49-51038-6 well was successfully drilled at Vadelyp field by KCA Deutag, SPD drilling contractor. The depth of the well is 2,770 meters (9,088 ft).

“This achievement is the latest evidence that SPD is realizing its well construction strategy with a great success. Based on a genuine teamwork, efficient long-term cooperation with our contractors, combination of the best world and Russian experience and focus on HSSE it enables SPD to construct high-quality wells in a very efficient and safe manner. I believe that we will continue to improve our performance further making a significant contribution to the successful development of the Salym group of fields”, Rob Tinkhof, SPD Well Engineering Manager, said.

“We have succeeded in setting a record by using of 5-blade drill bit produced by Burintekh company, noted SPD Drilling Supervisor Roman Orlov. We have already used it on several other wells, but this time the coordinated work of joint team of SPD, KCA Deutag and other contractors, operating without downtime and breakdowns, using quality equipment and complying with HSSE requirements, let us show a top-class performance and use a regular rig with maximum efficiency”.

The previous record was 1,196 meters (3,924 ft) per day. It was set by another SPD drilling contractor SSK at West-Salym field in 2012.
