Permneftemashremont organized the production of downhole telemetry systems with positive hydraulic communication pulse

Telemetry systems (MWD) with a positive hydraulic communication pulse belong to the hi-tech class equipment, which is designed to control the trajectory of directional and horizontal oil and gas wells. Until recently, 100 percent of these telemetry systems used in Russia were manufactured by foreign companies in England, USA and Canada.

The production of telemetry systems set up at Permneftemashremont is not a so-called “screwdriver assembly” of foreign component parts, being an in-house closed cycle of manufacturing of all details, which includes such hi-tech elements as a pulser and its control unit, and also an in-house software package for processing of the measurement results. This feature makes this production unique in Russia, ensuring reduction of costs of directional and horizontal well drilling. The total investment of the company in the telemetry system production since 2012 topped $20 million.

The telemetry system includes a downhole tool installed in the BHA above the downhole hydraulic motor and a surface instrumentation unit.

The downhole tool consists of a pulser, a downhole measuring assembly and a generator. In the course of drilling, the downhole tool measures navigational and geophysical parameters and, with the help of the pulser transforms them into pressure pulses which are transmitted along the fluid column in the drilling tool and are received by the pressure cell at the manifold.

The surface assembly includes a pressure cell, a receiver, a computer workstation, a load cell, a depth sensor and a driller’s monitor. On the surface, the signal received by the pressure cell at the manifold comes to the receiving unit where it is amplified, filtered and decoded. The decoded information comes to the driller’s monitor and operator’s computer and can be saved.

The telemetry system has its own software package, which processes measurement results, performs information exchange, editing, provides depth-tied measurement data and visualization on the monitor in digital and graphical form.

At present, the company has started serial production of telemetry systems with a hydraulic communication channel having the diameter 229, 178 and 108 millimeters; it also offers services on MWD and technological support of directional and horizontal well drilling using these telemetry systems.

The company is also performing research and design work aimed at creating the first domestic resistivity meter (LWD) – a tool for wave measurement of the formation resistivity while drilling. At present, all resistivity meters used in Russia are made abroad.
