SPD drilled a record well in 3.46 days, the fastest well ever drilled in SPD since the start of Salym group of oil fields development in 2003. The water source well of 1391-m length was drilled at Upper Salym field by SSK, SPD drilling contractor.

Blake Stephenson, Well Engineering Manager, commented on the achievement: “Since the first day of the Salym field development SPD focused on continuous improvement of well construction. This record confirms that we are using the right approach based on teamwork within SPD and efficient long-term cooperation with our contractors. In addition, in 2017 we implemented a set of important cross-functional projects enabled us to recapture the drive to deliver leading edge performance and quality in end-to-end well delivery. All of this contributes into successful realization of SPD strategy”.

This is the record one by two parameters: days on well (of any well) and best days/km for water source wells.

Since 2003 SPD drilled over 1250 wells of total length about 4000 km at the Salym group of oil fields. Currently the wells are drilled by two SPD drilling contractors, KCA Deutag and SSK. The previous record of 4.5 days was set in 2008.
